Molecular gas in the intergalactic medium of Stephan’s Quintet

چکیده
Stephan’s Quintet (SQ) is a Hickson Compact Group well known for its complex dynamical and star formation history and its rich intergalactic medium (IGM). In order to study the extent, origin and fate of the intergalactic molecular gas and its relation to the formation of stars outside galaxies and Tidal Dwarf Galaxies (TDGs), we mapped with the IRAM 30m antenna carbon monoxide (CO) towards several regions of the IGM in SQ. In two star forming regions (SQ A and B), situated in very different environments, we detected unusually large amounts of molecular gas (3.1×10 M⊙ and 7×10 8 M⊙, respectively), covering an extended area (between 15 and 25 kpc). In both regions the CO clouds have different properties and may be of a distinct nature. The integrated CO line of SQ A is in particular much wider than in SQ B. Its CO spectrum shows emission at two velocities (6000 and 6700 km s), coincident with two HI lines, with the stronger emission at 6000 km s being very smoothly distributed without a distinct peak in the starburst region. In SQ B the CO emission coincides with that of tracers of star formation (Hα, nearinfrared 15 μm and radio continuum). The CO peak lies close to the HI peak towards a steep HI gradient. This is indicating that the molecular gas is forming in-situ, with subsequent star formation taking place. The star forming region at SQ B is the object in SQ that most resembles a TDG.

A High Resolution Mosaic of Molecular Gas in Stephan’s Quintet
We present high resolution CO J=1−0 observations of the molecular gas in the Hickson Compact Group Stephan’s Quintet (HCG92). Our observations consist of multiple pointing and mosaics covering all the regions where CO and star formation has been detected. Within the 100 field of view centered on the eastern-most tidal tail, we detect three clumps of emission that may be partially resolved at ou...
متن کاملPowerful High Velocity-dispersion Molecular Hydrogen associated with an Intergalactic Shock Wave in Stephan’s Quintet
We present the discovery of strong mid-infrared emission lines of molecular hydrogen of apparently high velocity dispersion (∼870 km s) originating from a group-wide shock wave in Stephans Quintet. These Spitzer Space Telescope observations reveal emission lines of molecular hydrogen and little else. This is the first time an almost pure H2 line spectrum has been seen in an extragalactic object...
متن کاملCo in Stephan’s Quintet: First Evidence of Molecular Gas in the Intragroup Starburst
We present the first interferometric evidence of CO (1–0) emission in the intragroup starburst (IGS) region of HCG 92 (Stephan’s Quintet). BIMA’s large primary beam fully covers both the IGS region and the dominant group member Seyfert galaxy NGC 7319, as well as partially covering the intruder galaxy NGC 7318B. CO emission of *4 j is detected in all of them. The detection of the CO emission as...
متن کاملTurbulent Molecular Gas and Star Formation in the Shocked Intergalactic Medium of Stephan’s Quintet
We report on single-dish radio CO observations towards the inter-galactic medium (IGM) of the Stephan’s Quintet (hereafter SQ) compact group of galaxies. Extremely bright mid-IR H2 rotational line emission (L(H2) ≈ 1035 W) from warm (102−3 K) molecular gas has been detected by the Spitzer satellite in the kpcscale shock created by a collision between a galaxy, NGC 7318b, and NGC 7319’s tidal ar...
متن کاملThe dust emission SED of X-ray emitting regions in Stephan’s Quintet
We analysed the Spitzer maps of Stephan’s Quintet in order to investigate the nature of the dust emission associated with the X-ray emitting regions of the large scale intergalactic shock and of the group halo. This emission can in principle be powered by dust-gas particle collisions, thus providing efficient cooling of the hot gas. However the results of our analysis suggest that the dust emis...
